Is the Gerber multi-tool MP DET 600 any good?
Here is what I think my honest review!
Are you thinking about buying the Gerber multi-tool? I have been using a Gerber multi-tool for over 15 years! It is either in my bag or on my belt. I can truly say I used my DET MP 600 Gerber multi-tool just about every day, while I was deployed.
Hi, My name is Kurtis Pepper and today I am reviewing the Gerber Multi-tool. You can find it here on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2PvL4tZ the non-DET varient looks about half the price and can be found here: https://amzn.to/2SJofno A small commission may be earned. For clarification, the DET version has a punch and blasting cap crimpers.
For: +
Good price
Good size
Lots of tools
Against: -
Some tools not super easy to get to
Pliers would slip sometimes
Nylon case starts to wear at the tip of tool
The Gerber multi-tool is made for a specific set of tasks and it is priced well for it’s tools and tasks.
I have used other multi-tools and they were very small. Hard to use when you have a real task on your hands. The Gerber multi-tool is for a full size hand.
For what I used it for, the tools were great. Sometimes the pliers would slip or the screwdriver wasn’t exactly what I wanted. A couple tools are hard to get to with one hand.
One snap of the wrist to open the multi-tool. One hand use to get to most tools quickly. For the tasks I was doing, the multi-tool had exactly what I was looking for and was easy to get to and use.

The Gerber DET MP 600 is a fantastic tool to have on your belt. The price is great for how much I use this tool. Some multi-tools are too small, but this one is a good fit for my hands and gives leverage where others would cause fatigue. There are several tools on here and they will quickly become your go to tool. I used my previous Gerber multi-tool for 6 years, until I destroyed it on an explosive test, not on purpose. The one I am currently using has been with me for 8 years.
The problem I had with the nylon case on the previous version, was that after years of use I was wearing a hole in the end where the needle nose tip would rub against the nylon fabric. I was in danger of losing it if I wasn’t careful. This version of multi-tool looks to have fixed that problem. It is still a lightweight nylon case, the wear on this case is very little compared to the previous case.
The pliers work great for what they do. My complaint about them slipping was when working on something larger than the tool was built for they would slip sometimes. They are not channel locks, or locking pliers, so it is expected they would slip. Some of the tools have little thumbnail grooves that are at times difficult to get to. I wore gloves the majority of time using my multi-tool and the most used tools for me were still accessible. The lanyard loop seems a bit pointless, maybe someone out there finds it useful.
